Researchers at the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) have identified the cause of a stomach illness that has affected people in several states across the country.

The outbreak of the Cyclospora infection has affected 372 people in Iowa, Texas, Nebraska, Florida, Wisconsin, Illinois, New York City, Georgia, Missouri, Arkansas, Connecticut, Kansas, Minnesota, New Jersey, New York and Ohio.

CDC officials have identified the cause of the outbreak in Nebraska and Iowa as coming from packaged salad mix.

It has not been determined whether packaged salad mix is the cause of the other cases in other states but the CDC is continuing to investigate. At least 21 of the cases resulted in hospitalization, no deaths have been reported.

The CDC is working with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and state and local officials to determine the cause of all the cases and trace the origin of the illness.

The intestinal infection can cause severe diarrhea, stomach cramps, nausea and fatigue, the Star-Telegram is reporting. The illness is not spread through person to person contact and is caused by a microscopic parasite.
